Information about the traffic network comes from sensors and detectors, e.g. loops and traffic cameras, video cameras, and other sources. Latest technologies that provide information for traffic managemt are Bluetooth®-based systems and floating car data (FCD).

Real Time Traffic Observation

Traffic detection available to controllers and detector stations is aggregated and normalised in order to get a real time overview of the traffic status.

Signal groups status is retrieved in real time and made available as time based diagram and historical archive.

Traffic Operation Monitoring

The Solution connects a large number of field devices and external systems. The user is able to monitor all the equipment and system messages about technical issues that need to be processed. The basic information includes:

  •     Timestamps, device identifiers
  •     Description of devices or subsystems
  •     Error codes, error descriptions
  •     Status (fault, undefined, ok, etc.)

Based on monitoring features the alarm management component is responsible for generating alarms or warning messages to notify device failures and manage acknowledgments. Several notification channels are used to inform system users about detected faults.

Traffic Diagnostics & Device Diagnostics

The diagnostic component is used to record technical malfunctions in the system, the on-site equipment, communication systems and other technical equipment. The messages generated by the diagnostic tool are used to ensure minimal downtimes of the system and the equipment and fast recovery actions on monitored faults.

Traffic Data Collection

This component retrieves traffic related data from the field equipment and presents them to the user to display, export and print. The main values are:

  •     traffic volumes (count)
  •     speed
  •     occupancy
  •     classification (including vehicle speed and length)

For a comprehensive quality management, an easily-accessible overview of traffic data, events and situations is essential. This information is analysed and visualised in comprehensive statistics of individual data and possibly as aggregated data and combined evaluations or stored as a report. Reports are generated for all recorded malfunctions of individual components as well.

Video Management

Video streams from cameras are available to users for real time visualisation. Basic functionalities like panning, zooming and tilting are available directly via the user interface. The video management functionality integrates a dedicated sub-systems for the storage and archiving of video feeds.

Logging

The solution implements safety critical functions and therefore needs to provide a reliable logging function. This component is used to log all operational actions and system events with timestamps for later use in any kind of diagnostics or evaluation. The log files are accessible for diagnostics and it is possible to export them. All system events and changes in system settings are logged with timestamps for later use in evaluation. The logging functions covers also the possibility to generate relevant reports based on these data.

Different users have access to the system and the creation and modification of object data is logged by the system with date, time and user identification.

Advanced traffic management systems (ATMS) aim at improving traffic flow in urban areas by applying advanced traffic control functionality. This includes a more efficient utilization of the mobility network, improved traffic safety and an overall reduced environmental impact.

An ATMS is built around a central software system. On the one hand it receives information about the traffic situation from connected sensors and other sources, to monitor the traffic. On the other hand it actively influences traffic via signage, traffic signals or other means. In addition it can also provide traffic information to different road users, police or other stakeholders.
