SWARCO’s TT-B-1325D compliant glass beads — available in Type I, III, and IV — are engineered for optimal retroreflection. Independent studies by the FAA, US Army Corps of Engineers, and the Innovative Pavement Research Foundation show that high-index Type III beads can deliver up to five times higher retroreflection compared to conventional beads. This enhanced visibility is crucial for safe landings and taxiing in low light, rain, or fog. To this end, SWARCO offers Plus9Beads, a specially developed glass composition made exclusively from high-grade raw materials, specifically designed for airports. Our high-index airport beads, with a refractive index of 1.9+ and retro-reflective values of up to 1500 mcd/m²/lx, make them ideal for the most challenging marking requirements.
Durability in Harsh Conditions
Airport markings must withstand more than just aircraft traffic. They are exposed to fuels, deicers, hydraulic fluids, and snow removal equipment. SWARCO’s systems are tested for abrasion resistance, chemical durability, and strong adhesion to both asphalt and concrete surfaces.
