Optimal use of road capacity with Adaptive traffic control

Urbanization brings three important mobility trends. Roads are becoming more congested, the diversity of road users is increasing and the amount of traffic fluctuates more. This results in delays, impacts the livability and limits economic growth. Expanding the physical infrastructure is usually impossible due to a lack of space or budgets. To deal with these challenges, urban planners increasingly use smart mobility technology. Adaptive Traffic Control enable smarter usage of the infrastructure and increase road capacity. Peek Traffic’s ITS application, ImFlow, optimizes traffic flows in real-time. This improves livability, stimulates economic growth and reduces emissions.

Policy-based traffic control

ImFlow is an adaptive traffic control application using state of the art control algorithms to manage traffic flows. To optimize the traffic flow, the algorithms use a mix of real-time traffic data and prediction models. With a decentralized approach, ImFlow does not require a traffic control center for optimization.

However, the optional control center provides information about traffic performance at intersections and corridors. The philosophy behind ImFlow is enabling road authorities to control traffic based on their traffic policies. The policy objectives and parameters form the basis for control. Road authorities can configure requirements such as environmental targets, smooth traffic flow on key routes, prioritisation of public transport or stimulating cycling. These policy requirements are entered into the system and appear as ‘sliders’ in the console. By removing the current need for detailed parameter knowledge, ImFlow is easy to use for both engineers and policymakers.

Control modes

The ImFlow platform has three primary control modes that can be configured to fit the traffic scenario. These modes provide the flexibility and manageability to address future changes in traffic scenarios and policy.

  • Adaptive optimisation: This algorithm optimizes traffic, based on real-time traffic intensity and predicts traffic situations in the immediate future. The queue algorithm provides ImFlow with real-time data on the road capacity. This way ImFlow enables the optimal use of available space. By calculating the actual saturation flow, ImFlow will instantly respond to incidents and changing weather conditions.
  • Local optimisation: This algorithm optimizes flow, based on traffic presence. Green times are adjusted in line with realtime traffic volume to provide dynamic local control.
  • Green wave optimisation: This algorithm optimizes traffic across a series of intersections to create a green wave for traffic along one or more routes. The algorithm selects the right plan to optimise the green wave based on real-time traffic flow or a time schedule.

Supporting connected vehicles

Connected road users (C-ITS) use cases are embedded in the software. Enabling real-time data exchange between the traffic light controller and road users. Showing them time-to-red and time-to-green times, informing them about impending emergency vehicles and even providing priority at request. With these functionalities, ImFlow brings Smart Mobility to your city.
