EPD for SWARCO SOLIDPLUS: More Transparency for Premium Glass Beads

It’s here – the Environmental Product Declaration for SWARCO SOLIDPLUS! This provides our customers with continuously accessible, verified environmental data on our premium reflective glass beads, and gives our experts fresh insights for their further development.

Transparency is crucial to the quality of reflective glass beads – both literally and figuratively, especially when it comes to sustainability. It is therefore even more gratifying that an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is now available for our premium reflective glass beads, SWARCO SOLIDPLUS.

For years, SWARCO SOLIDPLUS has combined durability with excellent retroreflection. These reflective glass beads are a key component of modern high-performance road markings, significantly enhancing visibility and improving orientation – particularly at night, in rain, or in challenging lighting conditions, when reliable guidance is essential. In this way, they make a significant contribution to enhancing road safety and providing clear lane guidance even in challenging situations.

With the newly published Environmental Product Declaration, SWARCO Road Marking Systems is consistently extending its clear line toward sustainability and transparency. For the first time, a verified environmental profile for these reflective glass beads is available – well-founded, traceable, and comparable. This is not a “green label,” but an honest and measurable foundation: it reliably documents the ecological footprint and provides our customers with clear, verified information.

Driven by Performance, Guided by Sustainability

Beyond increased transparency, the creation of the EPD delivers a second, equally important benefit: it shows our experts where in the product life cycle the greatest environmental impacts occur. This is especially crucial for a premium product like SWARCO SOLIDPLUS, as performance and sustainability are intended to complement each other. Insights gained from the EPD help guide targeted improvements without compromising the product’s high technical performance.

The new EPD is part of the path SWARCO has chosen: we are already working on additional environmental declarations for glass beads and road marking materials – ensuring that sustainability becomes a verifiable characteristic of our products rather than a mere claim. This is our commitment to transparency, which we will continue to uphold consistently, including with our high-quality reflective glass beads

What is an EPD?

An EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) is a standardized, externally verified environmental product declaration that presents the environmental impacts of a product in a transparent and comparable manner.

What are EPDs used for?

They provide reliable environmental data for tenders, planning, and comparisons – and build trust because they are created and verified according to clearly defined rules.

Is this the first EPD from SWARCO?

No, SWARCO has already developed several EPDs for glass beads and road marking materials – including the world’s first Environmental Product Declaration for glass beads.

Which rules does an EPD follow?

EPDs are based on so-called Product Category Rules (PCRs). These define the methodology and environmental indicators to be assessed. For our road marking products, the relevant PCRs are those for Road Marking Systems and for Glass Beads for Road Marking Systems.

How is an EPD generally created?

EPDs are based on Life Cycle Assessments (LCA). For this purpose, data on raw materials, energy use, processes, transport, and emissions are collected, modeled, and then published and verified in the EPD.
