Paving the way for sustainability: New EPD for SWARCOPLAST Tex
What is the carbon footprint of a marking material? How much energy was required to produce it? And can the material be recycled at the end of its service life? An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) provides answers to precisely these questions. Following the world's first environmental product declaration for glass beads, the next step is now being taken:
SWARCOPLAST Tex, a cold plastic marking system for bike lanes that has been tried and tested for many years, now also has an officially verified EPD. This underscores SWARCO Road Marking Systems' consistent commitment to transparency, responsibility, and sustainability.
The Environmental Product Declaration that has now been published provides detailed figures on the entire life cycle of SWARCOPLAST Tex – from raw material extraction and production to recycling and disposal. All environmental data required for the declaration was compiled with great care and accuracy, and a Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) was carried out. The final document was reviewed, externally verified, and published by the Institute for Construction and Environment (IBU).
With the ever-increasing number of legal requirements and growing awareness of environmental issues, such information is becoming increasingly relevant. By providing EPDs for its products, SWARCO creates a reliable basis for all customers for whom sustainable procurement is important.
Reliable Bike Lane Marking System
The product in question, SWARCOPLAST Tex, is a solvent-free, reactive 2-component marking system. Thanks to its elasticity, the cold-applied system is ideal for large-area coatings – especially for bicycle paths at busy intersections. Its excellent grip also contributes to this, which is why no additional gritting materials are required.

SWARCO Road Marking Systems
"SWARCOPLAST Tex is a proven bike lane marking system that our customers have valued for years due to its versatility and reliability. However, in the future, reliable environmental performance indicators will become increasingly important alongside pure performance. It is therefore important that our customers can find all relevant environmental data for the product in an independently verified EPD – such as the carbon footprint, resource consumption, and recycling potential."
To ensure that this important information is also available for other SWARCO products in the future, the team responsible is already working intensively behind the scenes on further environmental product declarations – with the aim of continuously improving the transparency of the entire product portfolio.
What is an EPD?
An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is a standardized document that is verified by an independent body and contains accurate information about the environmental impact of a product. EPDs are based on a detailed life cycle analysis and provide information on, among other things, the carbon footprint, resource consumption, and recycling potential of the product in question.
Why are EPDs important?
They enable objective comparisons between products and form the basis for environmentally friendly tenders and sustainability assessments.
How is an EPD created?
The creation of an environmental product declaration involves several important steps. At SWARCO, certified experts systematically collect all relevant data and carry out a life cycle analysis (LCA) in accordance with international standards. The results are summarized in the EPD document and reviewed, verified, and published by an independent body—in our case, the IBU.
Is an EPD an environmental label?
An EPD is a Type III environmental label in accordance with ISO 14025.
Are EPDs valid internationally?
Yes, environmental product declarations are based on international standards (e.g., ISO 14025, EN 15804+A2) and are recognized worldwide.
How long is an EPD valid?
An EPD is generally valid for five years before it must be updated or reissued.
