What is YMAP?
The Young Mobility Ambassadors Program is a SWARCO initiative that empowers young people to become active voices for road safety. Aimed at students aged 14 to 19, it invites them to contribute ideas and projects that support safer, smarter mobility. Its goal is to raise awareness, inspire responsibility, and help reduce traffic risks among young road users.
A current topic of high social relevance
The Swiss 2025/2026 program focused on “Distraction in Road Traffic.” In doing so, YMAP once again addressed a topic that is especially relevant in the everyday lives of teenagers and young adults. According to the Switzerland page, the feedback from the education authorities was also very positive. In particular, they emphasized the high relevance of the road safety topic and the program’s lasting impact on awareness-raising and sensitization.
This is precisely where YMAP’s strength lies: the program does not communicate road safety only on a theoretical level, but actively encourages young people to engage with risks, responsibility, and safe behavior in a changing mobility environment. This approach is supported by learning materials, quiz formats, and accompanying resources for teachers and students, which SWARCO provides as part of the program.
Creativity as a key to road safety education
A key feature of the program is its openness to creative formats. SWARCO invites young people to submit projects in a wide variety of forms — such as videos, apps, illustrations, songs, stories, collages, comics, puzzle books, posters, computer games, board games, podcasts, or safety gadgets. Entries are evaluated based on creativity, effort, feasibility, and potential impact.
The Swiss 2025/2026 edition shows just how broadly this creative spectrum was used in practice. Among the submitted projects reviewed by the jury were mainly videos, songs, film projects, rap formats, and presentations that interpreted the topic of distraction in road traffic from a young person’s perspective. It is precisely this diversity that makes the program so valuable: it turns road safety education into something tangible, emotional, and relevant for the target group.
Strong participation across German-speaking Switzerland
The figures from the current program cycle underline the reach and relevance of the format in Switzerland: 350 pupils reached, 14 participating schools, 15 classes, and 34 submitted projects reflect a strong response from across German-speaking Switzerland. In the next step, the jury evaluated the top 10 projects, from which the three best entries were ultimately nominated.
This development also aligns with the program’s broader ambition to engage young people at an early stage and inspire them to take an active interest in road safety. Experience from other countries like Austria and Germany also shows that , such as Austria and Germany, critical road safety topics can be communicated especially effectively through creative contributions.
