Better public transport for Biella, Piedmont IT

SWARCO and OpenMove together with ATAP for more digital and sustainable mobility

SWARCO, in partnership with OpenMove, has been awarded the project to renew the ticketing and AVM (Automatic Vehicle Monitoring) systems of ATAP S.p.A., the public transport company operating in the province of Biella and surrounding areas. Biella itself is a 43,000-inhabitant town in north-western Italy in the Piedmont region.

This is a wide-ranging project that aims to digitize and innovate the entire mobility system, focusing on the citizen experience and the company's operational efficiency.

"This project represents an important step towards smarter and more connected public mobility. Thanks to our technologies and the know-how shared with OpenMove, we will support ATAP in creating a modern, interoperable system that fully complies with the safety and innovation standards required by the sector," comments SWARCO.

A citizen-friendly project

The new ticketing and monitoring system is designed to make the travel experience easier, more accessible, and more sustainable. The goal is to encourage the use of public and shared mobility while reducing the environmental impact of transportation.

Particular attention is paid to accessibility: integration with LETIsmart devices, designed to support visually impaired people, represents an important step towards truly inclusive mobility.

The project also promotes user autonomy in purchasing tickets, thanks to increasingly intuitive digital tools, and aims to make the travel experience more fluid and continuous, in line with the MaaS (Mobility as a Service) paradigm. The goal is to offer an integrated transport system that is competitive with private car use and capable of responding to new mobility habits and citizens' expectations.

Innovation for management and governance

The initiative concerns not only users, but also the management of public transport services. The integrated solutions from SWARCO and OpenMove will enable ATAP to plan and control its services more effectively, improving fleet and asset management and optimizing available resources.

The new system will also allow for easy integration with third-party services and platforms, promoting intermodality and the evolution of the system itself, and will offer effective tools to combat fare evasion, benefiting economic sustainability and compliance with regulations.

With this initiative, SWARCO confirms its commitment to promoting smart mobility solutions that combine technological innovation, safety, and environmental sustainability.

The collaboration with OpenMove and ATAP is a concrete example of how technology can improve the quality of public transport and make cities more livable, building mobility that truly serves people.
