Jointly with our sister company SWARCO TRAFFIC LTD we now offer the full range of parking and traffic management systems across the UK.

A short history of our business

A Business that was founded in 1961, APT Controls designed and manufactured its own barrier range, quickly established itself as one of the leading providers of car park management and vehicle access control systems. In 1975, the business added the supply and support of a range of mechanical parking meters imported from the USA, and then expanded this further in the early 1980’s by adding products manufactured in Europe, which using machine readable tickets with management software controlled Pay-on-Foot car parks.

In 1985 the business was acquired by Expamet International Plc and a few years later in 1992 the business went through a MBO. The new management team achieved another significant milestone when in 1998 when they entered into a Joint Venture Agreement with Skidata AG to establish APT Skidata Ltd, which would market and support the Skidata Car Access and People Access solutions in the UK.

A further growth step was taken in 2008, when APT branched out into the slightly less familiar territory of transport. Signpost Solutions Ltd, one of the country’s leading manufacturers and providers of support infrastructure for traffic signs and signals, was acquired by APT Controls to form part of the new APT Controls Group of businesses.

This followed shortly with further expansion in 2010 with APT’s entry into the relatively new market of electric vehicle charging solutions, and the introduction of the eVolt range of charge points. In 2011, in order to complement its existing parking product portfolio, Parking Pal Ltd was acquired by the Group. Parking Pal, under the Veri-park brand offers web based parking management solutions utilising ANPR technology, in place of the more traditional tickets and barriers.

In 2014 the management team and investors sold the business to SWARCO AG, creating one of the largest traffic and parking management systems businesses in Europe.

More recently in 2015, APT joined forces with a consortium of leading industry experts to develop, supply and support an award winning battery energy storage solution utilising 2nd life EV batteries, addressing concerns over the growing demand placed upon electricity networks.

Now headed by Group Managing Director, Sean Dunstan, APT Controls Group has grown from its humble beginnings more than fifty years ago to be one of the country’s leading UK businesses within the parking and eMobility markets. With a turnover of c£30m, the Group now employs more than 170 staff across three locations and serves more than a thousand clients across the UK with its range of products and services.
