TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT IN THE CITY OF LUXEMBURG - IMPLEMENTATION OF THREE METROPOLITAN TUNNELS , Luxemburg, City of Luxemburg

Challenge

Starting in 2004 SWARCO TRAFFIC SYSTEMS (then as Weiss-Electronic, in cooperation with a partner from Luxembourg), began to renew the tunnel control of the tunnel René Konen, which runs underneath the city center and pedestrian zone in Luxemburg City.

Since then, the traffic management and the tunnel technology has been further optimized and updated. Thus, e.g. the height control has partly been changed over to laser technology, central computers have been modernized and several test fields have been installed.

Additionally, two more tunnels in the city area - Pénétrante Sued and Desserte Schuman have been equipped, modernized and extended with traffic technology by STS over the years.

Details

In the current project all three tunnels as well as the traffic authority (Service de la circulation) were integrated into the control center of the tunnel René Konen. From there, they are directly linked to the new center in Luxembourg.

The data is transmitted via fiber optics. Images, sound as well as keyboard and mouse signals are transmitted via KVM-over-IP technology.

Instead of using individual operator computers, the data is switched to a video wall when triggered by an event. From there, the tunnels can be controlled by means of the individual STS central software systems. Desserte Schuman is integrated into the visualization of the René Konen central software whereas Pénétrante Sued has its own visualization and control system.
