CORRIDOR MANAGEMENT SYSTEM MOTORWAY A1 DORTMUND-UNNA – INTERCHANGE KAMEN, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany

Challenge

The section of the motorway A1 between Dortmund-Unna and the interchange Kamen is infamous for its high traffic volumes and congestions.

Details

In northward direction, on a length of approx. seven kilometers, a traffic management system with a total of 25 VMS in LED-technology and 15 radar detectors was implemented on the six-lane motorway.

At each of the five newly installed sign gantries five VMS and three radar sensors detect the traffic on the lanes and forward the data to an outstation in PRIMOS© traffic technology. This data, together with weather data from a weather station, is then used to determine the current traffic situation.

The sub-center evaluates the data and accordingly displays the necessary speed limits and warning signs such as fog, congestion, road words at the VMS.

Additionally, a VMS located in the opposite driving direction gives information about the traffic situation at the interchange Dortmund-Unna, whereas a roadside traffic sign with two VMS located at the ramp Kamen Zentrum (driving direction Bremen) is used to inform the accessing traffic.

The huge sign gantries reaching across six lanes were installed in a record time between August 2011 and January 2012. The project, with Business Unit Interurban as main contractor, spanned the whole project management scope of work including planning, construction of foundations, steel constructions, mounting and bringing into operation as well as the necessary traffic safeguarding.
