Dynamic Deer Warning Systems

SECTION-RELATED MONITORING AND WARNING OF DEER PASS

Each year, a large number of deer, boar and other wild animals is killed on the road. Due to the severity of these accidents, they often result in damage to persons or even deaths.

Reducing the number of accidents caused by wild animals by nearly 100%, deer warning systems prove a good solution. Deer pass systems do not only raise road safety but also actively make a contribution to protect nature: Habitats fragmented by roads are reunited and the genetic exchange of the wildlife is assured.

The section-related deer warning systems by SWARCO TRAFFIC SYSTEMS use state of the art measurement methods in combination with variable message signs in LED technology1 to monitor and secure roadsides. Opposite to the omnipresent static signs which often do not have any warning effect anymore, the dynamic warning system only reacts when animals actually come close to the road.

Safety fences secure the area at the side of the road and force the animals to only cross the road at defined spots. There, detection areas with sensors are installed and detect the animals when they approach. Then message signs such as deer pass signs and speed limits flash up in sufficient distance. The road user is warned and has enough time to slow down or avoid the collision, if necessary. Additionally, the detectors can be adjusted in such way that only larger animals are detected and small ones are ignored. This is done in order to avoid that the attention of the road users wears off because the situation is considered to be nonhazardous.

Electronic deer warning installation at the federal road B202 Rastorfer Kreuz

With approx. 30 accidents caused by deer, the federal road B202 near Kiel in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, is a well-known accident blackspot. Over a distance of four kilometers, two safety fences were installed to secure the area at the side of the road. At two spots, detection areas with six sensors each were established at the side of the road. Once animals are detected, warning signs flash up and show the warning "deer pass" and a speed reduction of 70 km/h (50 km/h).

The complete system is parameterized and visualized via the PRIMOS® MOTION central software. The software not only processes the animal detection as such but also the measurement data from the inductive loops detecting traffic data such as number of vehicles and vehicle classes. The traffic data, e.g. traffic volumes, is evaluated and used for statistical means. Also, the brightness and function of the signs can be adjusted. Additionally, the software includes a complete user administration as well as the logging of wild animal detections and the resulting switchings.
