Essen Town Council, 2009

Following Essen’s appointment as “European Capital of Culture 2010”, a new parking guidance and city information system for 571,000 inhabitants was needed. The project included the replacement of the outdated and incomplete parking guidance system with a powerful new one, offering added services to the driving public.

To meet the requirements of the tender, SWARCO implemented the following works, products and services/tasks in 2 expansion stages:

  • Removal of the old parking guidance system
  • Production and installation of the new parking guidance system
  • Installation of a new parking guidance computer
  • Civil engineering works
  • City-wide information system with 12 variable text signs
  • Real-time information about car park capacity utilisation (15,000 spaces at 20 car parks)
  • 340 new LCDs in 120 locations
  • Generic interface for the communication with the traffic management system
  • Internet interface providing car park data
  • Interface to “ADAC Parkinfo” (Germany’s and Europe’s largest automobile club)

The new parking guidance system helps motorists to quickly find empty parking spaces, facilitates orientation and reduces unnecessary traffic caused by motorists seeking parking spaces and hence reduces pollution. It leads to a more efficient utilization of the city’s parking capacities (e.g. at large shopping centres and the fairgrounds) and provides additional information about events, traffic conditions, construction works, etc.
