SWARCO helps Leeds to prepare for the Grand Départ

SWARCO TRAFFIC Limited is delighted to have been chosen by Leeds City Council to install our industry leading Variable Message Signs to provide information to the road users of the city.

Leeds has decided to expand the city’s information system with the purchase of 11 full colour matrix signs from North Yorkshire based SWARCO. The Urban MS4 signs will be 60 per cent larger than the city’s previous VMS and will provide the capability to display a wide range of messages and graphics.

A number of the new signs will be sited at strategic locations on routes on the outskirts of Leeds including the A63 Selby Road, A64 York Road, A61 Harrogate Road, A660 Otley Road and the A647 near Dawson’s Corner. Their installation will help to keep the city on the move during high-profile occasions such as the opening stage of this year’s Tour de France. The Grand Départ 2014 is expected to attract hundreds of thousands of visitors. Taking place on the 5th of July and starting from Leeds city centre, the race will pass through Harewood, Otley and Ilkley before finishing in Harrogate.

SWARCO’s VMS are fully UTMC compliant and will be operated using Leeds’ existing Mott MacDonald system, providing information about planned events and disruption as well as real time information about incidents and delays; enabling road users to make informed decisions about alternative travel choices.

A council report on the purchase decision says: “The Tour de France Grand Départ is a good example of a major event which will have significant implications for traffic in Leeds over a number of days. The proposed VMS signs would play a very significant role for this and future events and incidents in ensuring that the travelling public know how the road network will be affected and at what times.”
