INTERURBAN TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT SYSTEM, Sweden, Stockholm

The project had a very tight schedule and included a complete system with motorway control outstations, a communication system based on fibre cables, lane signals (speed signs) and radar detectors. Despite the narrow timeframe, SWARCO was able to complete the project two months before the deadline, the ITS world congress in Stockholm.

The project consists of a complete motorway system including communication infrastructure, with a total of 33 motorway outstations, 127 radar detectors, 111 fully graphical, full colour lane signals and 4 variable direction signs.

On this part of the E4 an extra lane was added and the hard shoulder was removed. The system will improve road safety and lead to a substantial increase in capacity. The new system will also reduce the cost for road maintenance.
