Gotthard Tunnel, 2003

Challenge

With a length of 17 km the Gotthard Tunnel in the Swiss Alps is one of the longest tunnels in the world and an important transit route between northern and southern Europe. To avoid unnecessary congestion and serious accidents, SWARCO implemented a new traffic control system and carried out major improvements to the tunnel’s security system.

Details

The vehicles are immediately directed to open lanes to enter the tunnel and are informed about possible tunnel closures due to unexpected incidents (e.g. accidents or CO² contamination):

  • Central control software
  • 2 super ordinate processor systems with web server
  • 2 auxiliary processor systems as emergency control with separate communication and direct access to the road station
  • 20 group data processors
  • 82 substations for the control of approx. 500 signals and traffic lights
  • 52 measurement cross-sections with induction loops and radar
  • 7 height control installations

Benefits

  • Avoidance of convoys due to the drive-through regulation system
  • The system can be controlled through special emergency checks even in case of a cable defect, equipment failure or a breakdown in the network structure
  • Improved traffic flow and safety
