INTERURBAN TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT, Germany, Berlin

Bundesrepublik Deutschland, Land Berlin, 2006-2008

Challenge

The tunnel “Airport Tegel” is part of Berlin’s inner-city motorway with a capacity utilisation of 90,000 vehicles a day. Due to the enormous exposure of the tunnel (built in 1979 with a length of 1,000 meters), a fundamental reconstruction with modern traffic and safety technology was inevitable.

Details

SWARCO’s traffic management system includes tunnel control, road control and integrates the tunnel into a network control system: With this modern and innovative system, the tunnel “Airport Tegel” is now ready to meet the requirements of today’s high traffic volumes. The system comprises of:

  • 26 road stations & central control software
  • 147 variable message signs (VMS with LED technology)
  • 32 variable message signs (prism openers)
  • 9 variable routes
  • 4 prism signs for variable routing
  • 107 radar detectors and 2 rain sensors
  • 3 double induction loops
  • 5 routing and blocking barriers
  • 5 height controls
  • 32 road markers

Benefits

  • Improved traffic flow even in unbalanced traffic situations (e.g. during peak times)
  • Successful traffic monitoring to avoid congestion
  • Safe and immediate re-routing of the traffic due to in-time information (e.g. accidents …)
