INTERURBAN TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT, Berlin

Berlin, 2006

Details

The tunnel Tiergarten Spreebogen (TTS) in Berlin has been equipped with a traffic control system by Weiss Electronic (now part of SWARCO TRAFFIC SYSTEMS). The 2.4 km long tunnel reduces the traffic volumes along the Parliament and government districts, connects the goods entrances of the service and office centres of Daimler-Chrysler, Sony-Centre and the multi-storey car park Lehrter Bahnhof and helps restore Tiergarten as a local recreation area.

Benefits

In case of tunnel closures the traffic control system automatically redirects traffic along the connected street network. Inside the tunnel, the system reacts to different requirements and the actual traffic situation. The heart of the system is the so-called "Dirigent" (conductor), a special control and monitoring software that makes sure that, if required, predefined traffic safety measures are taken.

The control centre and 61 control units manage 258 LED variable traffic signs, 28 variable direction signs, 88 prismatic signs, 93 radar detectors and 8 barriers. In March 2006 it was opened for traffic. The contract volume is 4.3 MEUR.

In a safety study on European tunnels conducted by ADAC in 2007, TTS was ranked second - not least because of the installations of Weiss Electronics.
