INTERURBAN TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT, Austria, Federal States
ASFiNAG (Austrian Federal Motorway Operating Company), 2003
Challenge
In the Republic of Austria, 6 major toll stations lead through tunnels and/or mountain passes. All these toll stations count for 22 toll lanes, where the road charge for cars, buses and trucks had to be collected in cash until the completion of the upgrade of the toll system in 2003.
Details
The Austrian toll lanes are uniformly equipped with prism signs. To grant a constant utilisation of the toll lanes, an advance signalling system was installed about 200 to 300 meter ahead of the toll station, indicating the operating status of the individual toll lanes with modern LED technology. The new system gives the possibility to collect the road charge from buses and trucks with a total weight of more than 3.5 tons electronically. Trucks and buses are now able to pass the toll stations without stopping.
