Vladimir Yakunin, President of the Russian Railways RZD, and SWARCO CEO Manfred Swarovski have signed a cooperation contract about the joint development and application of LED-based equipment within Russia's strategy to save energy also in the railway sector. In their meeting on April 6th, 2010, in Bratislava, both parties underlined the importance of the railway as traffic and transport mode for the Russian economy. The agreement with SWARCO parallels intentions to extend the 1520 gauge railway line from Cosice to Vienna.

Joining into the agreement are NIIAS, the Design&Research Institute for IT, Signalling and Telecommunications on Railway Transport, and SWARCO FUTURIT, specialist in the development and production of LED-based signalling technology. The agreement covers the integration of automated control systems by NIIAS with SWARCO LED signals to improve reliability and safety, reduce operational and maintenance expenses in order to further develop the railway industry and deliver high economic and technical performance.

The Parties also intend to collaborate in developing and testing joint products on trial sites of Russian Railways in the following areas:

  • Innovative intellectual transport systems for control and management of infrastructure facilities;
  • State-of-the-art information display equipment using advanced technologies of opto-electronic data processing;
  • Systems to ensure energy saving and higher energy efficiency for railway facilities.
